ICON Multifocal

This brilliantly conceived yet simple-to-fit contact lens is the first choice for many practitioners around the world. Thousands of successful long term wearers confirm this enduring product to be the ultimate in its class.

The ICON Multifocal design is based on the back surface geometry of the ICON Aspheric Single Vision lens. An aspheric centre distance front surface generates an increasing positive power towards the periphery, while the varifocal effect is achieved in two ways:

  • by simultaneous vision
  • by the contact lens’ natural tendency to translate on downgaze

A nominal +0.50 should be added to the patient’s spectacle reading add for optimal near vision.

ICON Multifocal offers excellent vision and comfort and is perfect for:

  • Existing Maxim Varifocal wearers
  • Patients requiring a budget multifocal option
  • Upgrades from traditional C3 and C4 designs
Selecting base curve
  • < 1.50D of corneal cyl fitted on flattest K
  • Between 1.50 and 3.00D of corneal cyl fitted 0.1mm steeper than flattest K
  • > 3.00D of corneal cyl fit Quasar FS
Selecting diameter
  • 9.80mm diameter as standard
  • 9.30mm diameter available for smaller corneas
Ideal fit
  • Alignment fluorescein pattern in central zone
  • 0.5mm band of edge clearance at periphery
  • 1-2mm movement on blink
  • Lens must be central or slightly low in primary position
Flat fit
  • Excessive movement
  • > 0.5mm fluorescein band at periphery due to edge stand-off
  • Poor comfort
  • Central touch
Steep fit
  • Fluorescein pooling under central zone
  • Reduced movement
  • Inadequate peripheral stand-off
Over refraction
  • Should be done monocularly
  • Ensure lens is not high riding before carrying out over refraction
  • Find maximum plus/minimum minus for distance power
To order
  • Provide K’s and spec Rx
  • Based on the aspheric design of ICON Aspheric Single Vision
  • Varifocal effect achieved by simultaneous vision and the lens’ natural tendency to translate on downgaze
  • A perfect alternative for existing Maxim Varifocal werarers
